Police investigate theft of over 200 gay pride flags in Massachusetts

Police say they are investigating the theft of over 200 Pride flags in Carlisle, Massachusetts, just days before the start of Pride Month.

According to a press release, the flags were removed Monday night from the roundabout in Carlisle Center near the intersection of Lowell Street and Bedford Road and Westford Road. They were last seen in the area Sunday night.

“We take this very seriously,” said Police Chief Andrew Amendola. “It’s unfortunate because Carlisle is an inclusive community and we want everyone to feel safe and welcome here.”

NBC Boston reported that within hours of the theft, community members came together to replace the flags.

Organizers of the local Pride event told the outlet that the turnout was larger than expected.

“The response from the community was overwhelming,” Pride co-organizer Rachel Gore Free told NBC Boston. “People showed solidarity.”

Saturday morning President Joe Biden posted on X At the start of Pride Month, he said, among other things: “For generations, LGBTQI+ Americans have had the courage to live proudly – ​​even when it meant risking their lives.”

Carlisle Police are still investigating the theft and are asking anyone with information to contact them.
