VIDEO | One person dies after a collision sends their car into a creek below

An unidentified woman was killed and a man was injured when two cars collided on East Grand Avenue Friday afternoon, causing one vehicle to break through the railing of an overpass and plunge into the middle branch of the Gulpha Creek below, Hot Springs police said.

Hot Springs police received a call about an injury crash in the 1900 block of East Grand around 12:46 a.m. Friday. When officers arrived, they found a 2001 Buick Century that had run off the road, HSPD Sergeant Joey Williams told The Sentinel-Record later in the day.

The Buick and a 2016 Toyota Corolla, driven by 26-year-old Lily Waycaster of Hot Springs Village, were both traveling eastbound in the 1900 block when the Buick “lost control, left the roadway to the left of the bridge and landed upside down in the creek below,” Williams said.

“We found a dead woman at the scene and a man who was also in the vehicle,” he said, noting that the names of the two had not been released at the time of the crime pending notification of next of kin.

Waycaster was uninjured, Williams said. “She never left the road. She was just hit by the (Buick) which went out of control.” He said the accident is being investigated by the Department of Transportation and names will be released at a later date.

A railing in the eastbound lane of East Grand was visibly damaged near the accident site. The vehicle was upside down in the water.

About 10 marked HSPD units were on scene with several officers, including Hot Springs Police Chief Billy Hrvatin.

There was initial confusion about how many people were in the Buick, but an investigation revealed there were only two people, Williams said.
