UC Santa Cruz issued the following statement Friday morning: Following the ongoing deliberate and dangerous blockade of campus entrances, UC Santa Cruz took action to remove the barricades and disperse the unlawful encampment. These actions began early today. For weeks, encampment participants repeatedly received clear instructions to vacate the encampment and stop blocking access to numerous campus resources and the campus itself. They were informed that their actions were unlawful and unsafe. And this morning, they were also asked multiple times by police to leave the area and disperse to avoid arrest. Unfortunately, many refused to comply with this order and many individuals were arrested. It is imperative that we restore full access to our campus and end other unlawful, unsafe actions as protesters continued to disrupt campus operations and threaten safety, even delaying the access of emergency vehicles. This was not possible without police intervention. These actions could have been avoided had encampment participants followed the many prior instructions given by campus officials, fire marshals, and police.
