Off-duty Philadelphia police officer injured in robbery and shooting on East Westmoreland Street in Port Richmond

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — An off-duty Philadelphia police officer was injured in a robbery and shooting early Thursday morning.

It happened around 5 a.m. in the 2100 block of E. Westmoreland Street in the Port Richmond neighborhood.

According to police, the 31-year-old victim was standing next to his Tesla when an armed man approached him and announced a robbery.

After the off-duty officer handed over his belongings, he ran away, officials say.

Then, police said, the suspect followed him and fired several shots.

The officer, who returned fire with his personal weapon, suffered a minor abrasion to his shin, which may have been a graze wound, according to city officials.

He was taken to Temple University Hospital and later released.

It is still unclear whether the suspect was injured by the shooting. He is currently still on the run.

The injured officer has served with the department for seven years and is assigned to the 16th District.

He will be entrusted with administrative tasks until the internal department has completed its investigation.
