Accident involving a semi-trailer truck rolling over on the New York State Thruway

For many New York and Hudson Valley commuters, driving the New York State Thruway is a normal and in many cases daily trip, whether for business or pleasure. However, the Thruway also comes with its own challenges, be it construction sites causing congestion and traffic, drivers who drive at excessive speeds, or in some unfortunate cases, accidents.

This exact scenario played out recently on the Thruway when a semi-trailer truck was involved in a serious rollover accident.

The serious accident occurred just yesterday, May 29, 2024. In the early morning hours, around 5:30 a.m., New York State Police officers arrived at the scene of the accident.

According to a press release from the New York State Police, the semi-truck rolled over while traveling on the eastbound side of the NYS Thruway, I-287. The vehicle was merging onto I-95 northbound via Exit 12 in the town of Rye in Westchester County. As it was taking that exit, the accident occurred on the ramp.

Road closure and traffic diversion

After the accident, police were forced to close traffic to Exit 12. This also forced police to divert eastbound traffic to I-95 South.

After police secured the scene, Westchester County EMS arrived on scene to care for the driver of the semi-truck. The driver was then transported by EMS to Stamford Hospital in Connecticut for treatment of minor injuries.

Work crews were also on site and began clearing away the mangled remains of the destroyed tractor-trailer and other debris created by the rollover. In addition, the rollover also damaged the guide rail, which the work crew also repaired.

Later that day, after the debris and wreckage were cleared, all lanes were reopened, including the detour to Exit 12. The press release ends by noting that police are still investigating the incident and that it is only now officially known what caused the rollover accident in the first place.
