Charlotte, NC – (Tuesday, May 28, 2024) – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) is currently investigating several incidents of street occupations that occurred on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Around midnight, a large group of vehicles and people gathered at Brooklyn Village Avenue and Brevard Street, with some individuals engaging in dangerous driving maneuvers and setting off fireworks. CMPD had already allocated resources to respond to these incidents. Officers cleared the active participants from traffic as quickly and safely as possible. Officers also responded to other locations with similar incidents, including East 36th Street.

The enforcement had the following result:

  • Seven citations for violations including reckless driving, participating in a highway robbery, witnessing a highway robbery, inducing a minor to commit a crime, driving without a license and resisting/delaying/obstructing

CMPD will continue to target street takeover and street racing groups and conduct enforcement actions until the behavior stops. Penalties for participants can include a Class 1 misdemeanor with a minimum fine of $1,000 on the first offense. Subsequent violations can result in a Class H felony, including a minimum fine of twice the value of the vehicle involved in the offense. Any motor vehicle involved in a street takeover may be impounded and held until court-ordered release. Both organizers and spectators of these events may also be cited and/or arrested. If citizens see these groups driving recklessly and behaving erratically, they are asked not to engage in it, but to call 911.

CMPD is asking the public for help in reporting public safety issues. Anyone with information about this weekend’s incident and/or in possession of video or photos is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. All tips will remain anonymous.
