Dhubri authorities suspend boating and fishing due to Cyclone Remal warning

GUWAHATI: Authorities in Dhubri, Assam have initiated strict security measures after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a cyclone warning for Cyclone Remal. The warning predicts gusty winds with a speed of 40-50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph, will hit south Assam and Meghalaya on May 27. In addition, heavy to very heavy rains are expected across Assam on May 27 and 28. In preparation, the Dhubri district administration has issued comprehensive instructions to protect lives and property.

Santana Bora, ACS, Deputy District Commissioner of Dhubri, in exercise of her powers under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and in her capacity as Chief Executive Officer of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Dhubri, has ordered immediate suspension of all ferry services operated by government and private entities from May 27-28. Essential services, relief and rescue operations and boats involved in the Dhubri-Phulbari bridge project, particularly transporting construction workers for L&T Ltd, are exempted from this order.

In addition, all fishing activities in the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are strictly prohibited during this period. This measure is aimed at preventing any possible loss of life and damage to property that could occur due to the hazardous weather conditions. The proactive approach of the district authorities underlines their commitment to ensure public safety during this period of heightened risk.

To ensure compliance with these instructions, the Deputy Chief Engineer of Inland Water Transport, Dhubri, has been assigned the task of monitoring the situation. The engineer has to report to the CEO of DDMA, Dhubri, on a daily basis to ensure that all instructions are followed and to promptly address any issues that arise.

Residents of Dhubri are requested to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the district prepares for the impact of Cyclone Remal. Local authorities remain on high alert and are ready to respond promptly to any emergency to ensure that the district is well prepared to face the challenges posed by the cyclone. The joint efforts of the district administration are aimed at minimising risks and protecting the wellbeing of the residents of Dhubri during this critical time.
