Cleaner killed in dump truck accident in Navi Mumbai; driver arrested

Thane: Police have registered a case against a dumper truck driver in connection with the death of the cleaning staff following an accident involving the vehicle in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, an official said on Monday.

The incident took place on the evening of May 23 when the accused took the vehicle for repairs, said the officer of Panvel Town police station.

On a road turning towards Kalamboli, the driver heard a scraping sound coming from the wheels. On checking, he found that there was a stone stuck in one of the wheels and sought help from the 54-year-old cleaning service to remove it.

While the cleaner was removing the stone from the wheel, the accused is said to have moved the dump truck and crushed the stone, the officer said.

The victim was seriously injured and died on the way to the hospital, he said.

After the alarm was raised, the police arrived at the scene of the accident and sent the body to a local hospital for an autopsy.

Acting on a complaint by a relative of the deceased, police on Sunday registered a case against the driver of the dump truck under sections 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code (causing death by negligence), 279 (reckless driving or driving on public way), 337 (causing hurt by endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by endangering life or personal safety of others) and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, the official said.
