Driver dies after crash in Kansas City following Independence Police chase

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – One person is dead in a three-vehicle collision near the Sun Fresh Market in Kansas City during a chase that began in Independence.

Shortly after 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, Kansas City, Missouri police said they were notified by the Independence Police Department that a pursuit had reached the city limits.

Police said they were on 31st St. looking for a white Chevrolet Z71 pickup truck heading west. But near 31st Street and Wabash, the truck hit a black Audi Q5 traveling east.

KCPD said the truck then crashed into a KIA Sportage that was also traveling west before leaving the road and traveling over the sidewalk. The vehicle continued through a wrought iron fence and up a grassy embankment where it eventually collided with a large tree.

First responders said the driver of the pickup was taken to a local hospital before he was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, the driver and passenger of the KIA were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Audi remained uninjured.

KCPD determined that Kansas City officers were never involved in the chase. This is KCMO’s 40th road fatality this year, compared to 29 this time last year.
