Toyota shuts down packaging line after cyber attack on Japanese port

TOKYO (Reuters) – Toyota Motor plans to halt operations at a packaging line for exported components on Friday, the automaker said on Thursday, after a cyberattack on Japan’s largest port triggered a system error and halted work for more than two days.

The port of Nagoya in central Japan, where Toyota exports most of its cars, was hit by a ransomware attack on Tuesday morning, leaving it unable to load and unload containers from trailers.

The port partially resumed cargo operations on Thursday afternoon, half a day later than originally expected, but will not be fully operational until the evening, the Nagoya Harbor Transportation Authority said.

Toyota said it would decide whether to resume operations at the packaging facility based on the port’s operational status. At this point, the automaker does not expect any immediate impact on the operations of its foreign vehicle plants.

Domestic production of finished cars will not be affected, the company said.

The port’s computer system recovered Thursday morning, but later than expected, the port authority said.
