New round of layoffs at Tesla brings local job loss to 346

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A fifth round of layoffs has been made at Tesla’s Buffalo operations, bringing the total number of jobs lost here to 346.

A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice was filed with the state for 27 workers – 26 at the Gigafactory on South Park Avenue and one at the service center across the street.

According to the notice, Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) now has 2,032 employees in Buffalo. It must maintain at least 1,460 workers at state-built facilities to remain in compliance with its agreement with Empire State Development.

The local layoffs are the result of the electric vehicle maker’s decision to reduce its global workforce by 10%, or 14,000 of its 140,000 employees. The company’s sales and revenue fell 9% in the first quarter of the year compared to the first quarter of last year.
