On May 10, 2024, at approximately 4:10 a.m., Chesapeake Police responded to Route 58 near the 5100 block of W. Military Highway for a motor vehicle accident involving a semi-truck and a white sedan. When police arrived on scene, they contacted the driver of the tractor-trailer. It was determined that the adult male driver of the sedan was deceased. It was determined that the tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on Route 58 and attempted to turn into the eastbound lanes. A sedan traveling eastbound struck the semi-truck during the U-turn.

The Chesapeake Police Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to investigate the accident. The tractor-trailer driver remained on scene and the accident remains under investigation.

During the accident, the tractor-trailer’s fuel tank ruptured and a large amount of diesel fuel spilled across the eastbound lanes. The appropriate HAZMAT teams have been notified and will respond to assist in the cleanup effort. Two eastbound lanes of Route 58 reopened around 10 a.m. and all westbound lanes reopened at 7:00 a.m. Motorists are urged to avoid the area during the cleanup.
