The severed leg of an Australian surfer who was attacked by a shark has washed ashore. Doctors hope they can sew the leg back on.

Kai McKenzie, 23, was surfing in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, on Tuesday when he was attacked by a shark. He managed to fight back, but his right leg was severed.

A neighbor of his family said he managed to cross a wave and reach the shore, where a passerby used the dog’s leash as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

His leg was washed ashore shortly afterwards and placed on ice by local residents, according to local reports.

Mr McKenzie was initially taken to a local hospital before he and his leg were flown by helicopter to a major trauma centre about 200 kilometres away.

Doctors are now working quickly to see if they can sew the leg back on. Mr McKenzie’s condition remains serious but stable.

It is believed that Mr McKenzie was bitten by a three-metre long great white shark.
