Kuwait: Family of four from Kerala killed in fire accident, Indian mission repatriates remains

The Indian Mission on Saturday expressed grief over the tragic death of four members of a family from Kerala who died in a fire at their residence in Kuwait.

“The Embassy @indembkwt expresses its deepest condolences on the tragic death of Mr. Mathews Mulackal, his wife and two children in a fire at his residence in Abassiya last night. The Embassy is in touch with his family and will arrange for the early repatriation of the remains,” the Indian mission said in a post on X.

The incident took place in Abbassia in Kuwait on Friday evening. The victims were identified as Mathew Muzhakkal, his wife Lini Abraham and their children Isaac and Erin. The family left for Kuwait on Thursday evening after their holiday. “Mathew has been working there for the last 15 years. His wife is a nurse. The children are studying there. They left Nedumbassery on Thursday evening after their holiday,” a relative told the media on Saturday.

The victims’ family has not yet received official confirmation about the arrival of the bodies in their hometown. Mathew leaves behind his mother and three siblings. According to preliminary information, the fire was caused by a short circuit in the air conditioning in the room. Further details are awaited. Last month, more than 40 Indian migrant workers were killed in a building fire. Their remains were subsequently repatriated to India.
