The KURUMAN Regional Court recently imposed a 20-year prison sentence on a 41-year-old man convicted of raping a 39-year-old woman in Wrenchville.

The incident occurred on July 27, 2023.

According to Northern Cape Police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, the victim had recently ended her relationship with the accused, Moses Leck Leier. She obtained a protection order against him and sought legal protection. However, Leier ignored the order.

Leier went to the victim’s house and threatened her with a chain. He then forcibly took her to his own house where he raped her. The woman reported the incident to the police and Leier was quickly arrested the next day.

The court sentenced Leier to 20 years in prison for the rape. Five years of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar crime during the probation period.

In addition, Leier was declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be placed on the National Sex Offender Registry.

The investigation was led by Detective Sergeant Keitshwaretswe Tshikedi of the Domestic Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit of the Kuruman SAPS. Her meticulous investigation and hard work ensured justice for the victim and sent a strong message against sexual violence in the community.
