Overdose spike warning after unexpected increase in overdoses in Dane County – The Badger Herald

The Madison & Dane County Health Department issued a Overdose peak alert Tuesday afternoon following a larger than expected increase in drug overdoses in Dane County on July 8.

Two people died and at least six people suffered an overdose on Monday, the warning said.

“That’s more overdoses than we normally see in our community,” the warning said.

In the past week, PHMDC has also seen an increase in reports of dizziness and drowsiness caused by the use of meth and crack. These are unusual symptoms when taking these drugs and indicate that another substance may be mixed with them.

The warning urged first responders, medical personnel, and drug users and their families to be aware of the increased risk in the community.

If an overdose is suspected, people should always call 911. According to the warning, signs of an overdose include pale, sweaty or clammy skin, blue lips or fingertips, slow or irregular breathing, and difficulty waking up.

PHMDCs Syringe service program offers free safer-use products such as fentanyl test strips and Narcan nasal spray in a nonjudgmental environment at 2705 E. Washington Ave. and 2300 S. Park St., Suite 2010. Hours: Mon-Fri, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
