Cantonal police officer suspended after trial against Karen Read

PROCTOR TOOK THE WITNESS STAND. ANTOINETTE AND DOUG. GOOD MORNING. THAT’S HOW IT IS, AND WE’RE JUST LEARNING ABOUT IT NOW. THE POLICE CHIEF HERE IN CANTON CONFIRMED THAT KEVIN ALBERT, A DETECTIVE HERE IN CANTON, WAS RE-ELEVATED ON JUNE 13TH. THAT WAS THREE DAYS AFTER TROOPER MICHAEL PROCTOR TOOK THE WITNESS STAND IN THE KAREN REED CASE. THE CHIEF SAID ALBERT WAS RE-ELEVATED PENDING THE INVESTIGATION OF PROCTOR’S TESTIMONY. ON THE STAND, PROCTOR ADMITTED THAT HE WAS FRIENDLY WITH KEVIN ALBERT. HE TELLS THE JURY THAT THEY WENT OUT FOR A DRINK A FEW MONTHS AFTER JOHN O’KEEFE’S DEATH. THEY WERE WORKING TOGETHER ON AN UNKNOWN CASE AND COMMUNICATED ABOUT THE O’KEEFE CASE. THE CANTON POLICE DEPARTMENT HAD ALREADY REMOVED FROM THE INVESTIGATION BECAUSE OF ALBERT’S CONNECTION TO IT. KEVIN, ALBERT’S BROTHER BRIAN, WAS A KEY WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION AND ONE OF THE PEOPLE THE DEFENSE WANTED TO IMPLICIT IN O’KEEFE’S DEATH. EARLIER THIS WEEK, PROCTOR WAS PLACED ON UNPAID LEAVE BY THE STATE POLICE AFTER A STATUS OF SERVICE HEARING, DUE TO ABUSIVE TEXT MESSAGES HE SENT FROM HIS PERSONAL PHONE TO COLLEAGUES AND FRIENDS. THOSE MESSAGES ARE OF COURSE KAREN, READ, THE UNION REPRESENTING TROOPER PROCTOR CALLS THE MOVE, QUOTE, DISAPPOINTING. IN A STATEMENT, THE STATE POLICE ASSOCIATION OF MASSACHUSETTS SAYS IT WILL NEVER TOLERATE, QUOTE, THE UNACCEPTABLE LANGUAGE IN PERSONAL TEXT MESSAGES PRESENTED AS EVIDENCE DURING THE TRIAL. BUT THE UNION SAYS THE SUSPENSION IS A PUNISHMENT FOR PROCTOR’S FAMILY. TROOPER PROCTOR REMAINS THE SUBJECT OF AN ONGOING INTERNAL INVESTIGATION WHICH WILL BE REPORTED LIVE FROM CANTON THIS MORNING.
