Missing Dartmouth College student Won Jang, 20, found dead

The body of a missing Dartmouth College student was recovered from the Connecticut River in Hanover, NH, Sunday evening, authorities said.

The cause of death of 20-year-old Won Jang is still under investigation, but foul play is not suspected, according to a statement from Hanover Police Chief Charles B. Dennis.

Witnesses said they last saw Jang near the docks at 8 Boathouse Road on Saturday evening, then police and firefighters responded to a report of a missing student in that area on Sunday afternoon, the statement said.

Jang’s body was found about 20 meters offshore at around 7:30 p.m.

In an interview, Dennis said that university officials had forwarded at least one anonymous email to his department suggesting that alcohol or hazing may have been involved.

“We would look at this in any investigation anyway,” Dennis told the Boston Globe, “but it will certainly be part of our investigation as we thoroughly investigate this premature death.”

Dennis declined to provide details about the anonymous email, and university officials did not immediately respond to The Globe’s questions about the anonymous report on Monday.

Jang had attended an event Saturday night near the river that Dartmouth College officials called a “social gathering,” according to an email sent to the campus community by Dean Scott C. Brown.

Brown wrote that Jang was a student from Middletown, Delaware, who pursued academic and personal opportunities “wholeheartedly.” Jang studied biomedical engineering, was a project manager in the DALI lab, a research assistant, a member of Beta Alpha Omega fraternity, and more.

“We understand this is very difficult news for our community and encourage you to seek support, whether you need a listening ear or guidance to get through this difficult time,” Brown wrote. “We have been in touch with Won’s fraternity brothers and other friends.”

The college distributed mental health and crisis response information to the campus community.

According to the police statement, crews arriving at the scene included a dive team from the Hanover Fire Department, the State Police Marine Patrol and employees from the Hampshire State Department of Fish and Game, who took over the leadership of the search operation.

Anyone with information about the ongoing police investigation is asked to call Hanover Police at 603-643-2222.
