Why Spain captain Alvaro Morata is not banned from the semi-finals of the 2024 European Championship despite “warning against Germany”

Spain have received a boost from the news that their captain Alvaro Morata is available for the semi-finals of the 2024 European Championship.

Initially it was said that the striker would be suspended for the match against France after receiving a yellow card in the match against Germany.

The Spanish captain can lead the line freely

But even though this was his second yellow card of the tournament, he will be allowed to play against Les Bleus, which will be broadcast live on talkSPORT.

talkSPORT.com has investigated the reasons for this.

Why can Morata play against France?

Although UEFA and television coverage of Spain’s 2-1 victory over Germany suggested that Morata had been shown a yellow card after Mikel Merino’s winning goal, this was not actually the case.

It was a big mess and the Atletico Madrid striker did not receive his second yellow card of the tournament.

He was asked about this after helping his team to victory against the hosts in the quarter-finals and confirmed that he had not received a yellow card.

Morata received a yellow card in the 4-1 win over Georgia. Had he received a yellow card in the quarter-finals, he would have faced a suspension.

Morata can play for Spain against France

It was reported that he did so, but UEFA has clarified that Morata was not penalised for the incident.

It can therefore be assumed that he will compete for La Roja.

Spain will be without the suspended Dani Carvajal and Robin le Normand, while Pedri is injured.

Therefore, Morata’s return is a great advantage for Spain as they look to reach the final of the 2024 European Championship on Sunday, where they would face England or the Netherlands.
