12-year-old girl killed, nine others injured in South LA crash

A 12-year-old girl was killed and nine others injured in a multi-vehicle crash in South Los Angeles on Friday night, authorities said.

According to a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman, officers responded to the area of ​​the intersection of East Century and Avalon Boulevard around 6 p.m. after a driver attempting a U-turn and two other cars were involved in an accident.

The 12-year-old girl, who officials believe was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the car and died at the scene of the accident, the spokesman said.

One of the drivers was trapped in her car after the collision and had to be extricated by firefighters, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. She was taken to a hospital in serious condition but is expected to survive, authorities said.

Eight other people – five adults and three children – were injured and taken to a hospital in moderate to serious condition. None of their injuries were life-threatening, the LAPD spokesman said.
