3 people arrested for illegal dumping of trash in Pierson | WNDB

Chris Gollon

Three men were arrested by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office last week for dumping 860 pounds of trash in Pierson, according to a VSO report. The dumping occurred near the entrance to the Lake George Wildlife Management Area.

The VSO went to the dumping site and was working with residents to clear trash from the street when they came across a piece of evidence that would lead them to their suspects: a receipt from Winn-Dixie in the trash. Two cans of Bumble Bee tuna and two jugs of spring water had been purchased there.

Officers took the receipt to the Winn-Dixie store in question and, together with the store, were able to identify three men who had presumably disposed of the garbage. When officers located them, they were apparently able to obtain a confession.

The men told officers that they had recently completed an insulation job and one of them had come up with the idea of dumping the garbage on a side road to avoid having to take it to the dump. He said he knew it was a bad idea, but he thought it would be more convenient.

The three suspects arrested by the VSO are 51-year-old James Dunne, 21-year-old Connor Dunne and 24-year-old Kyle Hayes. All three were charged with dumping over 500 pounds of trash, which is a felony. Hayes has a previous arrest for driving under the influence and burglary.
