Road accidents: 21 accident-prone ‘hotspots’ in Nashik city: Police | Nashik News

Nashik: As many as 21 places in the city are prone to recurrent road accidents for various reasons and have been identified as ‘accident black spots’. According to the city police, such black spots have recorded at least five or more accidents resulting in serious injuries or deaths or 10 deaths in the last three years. One such place, Dwarka Junction on the Mumbai-Agra Highway passing through Nashik city, saw 35 accidents resulting in 20 deaths between 2021 and 2023. Keeping in mind the rush of vehicles and repeated accidents at this junction, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had even constructed a flyover here and opened it in June 2013, apart from widening the carriageway below the flyover and laying service roads alongside it. A pedestrian underpass was also constructed at this location to reduce the risk of accidents. However, this junction remains the most accident-prone in the city. Among other accident black spots, police said that between 2021 and 2023, 12 accidents each occurred on the ramp to the flyover in Ambad and on the road in front of KK Wagh College. Shinde and Palse villages, which are 2.5 km apart along the Nashik-Pune highway, also saw 11 accidents each during the same period. Other accident black spots listed include Adgaon Truck Terminal, Jatra Hotel Chowk, Shere Punjab Hotel Chowk in Adgaon opposite Panchavati College, Tractor House Chowk, Amrutdham Chowk and Garware T-Point, all on the Mumbai-Agra highway that passes through the city. On the Pune highway, Bytco Junction, Upnagar and Datta Mandir traffic signal are other notorious accident spots. Abhay Kulkarni of Nashik First organisation, which has been working with over two lakh citizens since 2015, said, “The authorities like police, Regional Transport Office, NHAI, Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) and others all need to work together to properly identify the causes of road accidents and find out how to reduce them.” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP-HQ and Traffic) Chandrakant Khandvi, on the other hand, said, “Preventing road accidents is a shared responsibility of all and this includes motorists, pedestrians, shopkeepers, street vendors and others. Everyone must ensure that they do not endanger the lives of others by their behaviour on the road. The police are taking all measures including cautioning erring motorists and communicating with the authorities concerned to prevent road accidents.”
