Predicting Production: Houston Texans Running Back Joe Mixon

The Texans had decent production from the running back position in 2023 from Devin Singletary, who accounted for 898 yards and four touchdowns.

Although Singletary was above average at times, Houston felt like they needed an upgrade, and that’s exactly what they did with the addition of the Pro’s running back Bowl Joe Mixon.

General manager Nick Caserio was aggressive this offseason in acquiring talent at all levels and Mixon was one of them. Mixon was set to be released by the Cincinnati Bengals, but Caserio sent a late-round draft pick in 2024 to keep the veteran from hitting the open market.

Mixon is still just 27 years old and coming off a 2023 season in which he rushed for over 1,000 yards to go along with nine rushing touchdowns. Mixon also caught 52 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns without star quarterback Joe Burrow for much of the year.

Most running backs have seen an extreme decline in production due to the nature of the position, but Mixon isn’t at that point yet and will still be able to produce at a high level in offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik’s offense.

PRODUCTION FORECAST: 1,100 RUNNING YARDS, 350 RECEIVING YARDS / 10 TOTAL TOUCHDOWNS

Not only does Mixon help tremendously in the rushing attack, but he’s also a receiving threat that the Texans will surely utilize in the future. Given how excellent the Texans’ passing game is, Mixon will have much more favorable matchups to take advantage of on a consistent basis.

Adding a durable player like Mixon to the Texans offense was a great move by Caserio and the Texans front office. The move will surely take some pressure off second-year quarterback CJ Stroud, something the Texans have emphasized this offseason.
