Suspect shot during search by SLCPD officer, investigation ongoing

SALT LAKE CITY – A Salt Lake City Police Department officer fired “at least one shot” at a suspect Saturday morning who was subsequently taken to a hospital, police said.

A news release from the SLCPD said the Utah Highway Patrol observed a white Dodge Ram speeding and “violating vehicle equipment regulations” at 12:10 a.m. The truck sped away before the UHP could stop it, police said.

The release states that UHP found the abandoned truck near 5650 W. 700 South and requested assistance from SLCPD at 12:25 a.m.

During the manhunt for the suspects, “a Salt Lake City police officer fired at least one shot,” the press release states, at around 12:40 a.m.

SLCPD reported that officers administered first aid and paramedics subsequently transported the injured suspect to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“This incident appears to have evolved very quickly,” said SLCPD Chief Mike Brown. “Our priority is to support our officers involved and facilitate a thorough and professional investigation to determine the circumstances and facts.”

Police said they had arrested two suspects, including the injured man. No other injuries were reported, officials said.

Additional officers were on site to search for other people involved. They conducted a ground and air search, the officers said. They reported that no other suspects had been found so far.

The SLCPD said several investigations are ongoing and may provide new information regarding the shooting.

“The Salt Lake City Police officer involved will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure,” the press release said, referring to protocol for critical incidents involving a police officer.

This message is current and will be updated as soon as KSL receives new information.
