Posey County emergency responders work together on mass casualty training

POSEY COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) – Firefighters from Black Township Fire and Rescue and other agencies met Friday evening for mass casualty response training at Farmersville Elementary School.

The event will enable first responders to be prepared for disasters.

At a rock concert at the Indiana State Fair, 45 volunteers played victims of a real, deadly storm. Rescue crews, fire trucks, ambulances and Indiana State Police were on the move to rescue the imaginary victims.

While surveying 200 acres of land, rescue workers monitored fires, flew drones to find victims and drove to the scene with medical equipment.

As rescue workers en route, Eyewitness News heard screams from parents and passersby asking where their children were. We also heard cries of pain from victims waiting for help.

An official said first responders were dealing with several different situations at the same time.

“It could be head injuries, maybe an arm has been torn off. They mimic all kinds of injuries and everything,” says Kevin Brown, deputy chief of Black Township. “They could mimic deceased people who have already passed away and who we are no longer working on.”

We also spoke to a participant who pretends to be impaled by a stick and who wants to involve his family in the community.

“We brought our daughters here and we want them to join in and see what the emergency team does and maybe prepare them for an emergency,” says Bryan Dowler, a volunteer.

Within 90 minutes all volunteers were found.
