Suspect used air rifle in traffic accident in Twin Falls, police said

An apparent incident of driving aggression in April, in which police say a Kimberly man pointed a gun at another motorist at close range, resulted in a charge of aggravated assault.

The weapon looked like a .45 Magnum revolver, but turned out to be just an air rifle that resembled a large-caliber handgun, court records say.

A motorist said he fled the scene on the afternoon of April 6 after Kane Daniel Hutsell, 47, stopped in the road in front of him south of Twin Falls and did not move. The man said he honked, causing Hutsell to get out of his vehicle and point the gun at him, with the gun even touching his head.

“I’m going to f***ing kill you,” Hutsell reportedly said. The man said he then fled and called police, providing a license plate number that led police to the suspect.

Hutsell admitted to police that he pointed a gun at the man’s vehicle, but only after the driver was so close to him on the stretch from the intersection of Blue Lakes Boulevard South and Orchard Street to the Amalgamated sugar factory that he could no longer see the front of the vehicle in the rearview mirror.

The alleged victim said Hutsell was texting at a stop sign at the corner of Orchard Drive and Eastland Drive, then drove to a railroad crossing and stopped again, where the incident occurred.

A charge of possession of a firearm was added to the aggravated assault charge. Even though the weapon allegedly used in the incident was an air rifle, records show it still poses a risk of causing a skull fracture and possible death if held up and fired from a person’s head.
