“These agents should have the same powers. They can make arrests, etc. as a sheriff in this county,” said attorney Robin Flores of the law firm.

An exception in Tennessee state law states that investigators may initiate investigations into any crime involving corruption or misconduct by a public official without a request from the attorney general.

District Attorney pro tempore D. Michael Dunavant made the request here. Attorney and former police officer Robin Flores explains that an outside district attorney was likely brought in to protect the integrity of the investigation.

“You don’t want the incumbent 11th District Attorney to appear to be behaving inappropriately because people might say she is biased against the police officers in this community,” Flores said.

There is also the possibility of intervention by the federal government.

“The FBI and the Department of Justice are responsible for investigating corruption against government officials,” Flores said.
