Road safety and accident safety tips from the Adair County Sheriff | Raccoon Valley Radio

Accidents and collisions are a part of life when it comes to vehicles and driving.

According to Adair County Sheriff Jeff Vandewater, one of the main ways drivers can avoid these accidents is by reducing distractions, such as not using their cell phones and not taking their eyes off the road for too long. Vandewater tells Raccoon Valley Radio what people involved in an accident should do.

“In general, of course, if there is an injury and medical attention is required, you must report it immediately. Be aware of your surroundings. It can make a difference whether you hit a deer on a gravel road with little traffic or on Interstate 80 with a lot of traffic.”

Vandewater mentions that after an accident, and after emergency services have been notified if necessary, the next step should be to contact your insurance company. He adds that any drivers involved in a multi-vehicle accident should also be sure to exchange their insurance information.
