Blue Jays-Red Sox game suspended on June 26

BOSTON – Wednesday’s finale at Fenway Park was interrupted due to heavy rain, so the Red Sox and Blue Jays will have to replay that game on Aug. 26.

This game will pick up where the previous one left off, with an out for the Blue Jays at the top of the second inning, at 2:05 p.m. ET as the first part of a split doubleheader.

Play did not reach the height of the second inning when rain showers began to fall, prompting umpires to wave players off the field in the middle of Danny Jansen’s batting appearance. After a one-hour, 48-minute delay, during which water pooled on the field and the rain showed no sign of stopping, play was called.

On the Blue Jays side, Yariel Rodríguez was determined to keep playing. When a delay occurred, he went with the relievers and pitching coach Pete Walker to Toronto’s bullpen, where he continued to simulate the game. It looked like Rodríguez was trying to slow things down to stay warm for a possible restart, but that never happened.

Kutter Crawford had 23 pitches with two strikeouts and two walks in his start for the Red Sox before the game was called off. Josh Winckowski, the Red Sox’s long man in the bullpen, just allowed 91 pitches in six innings as a relief pitcher on Tuesday and is scheduled to start Sunday, so they would be overwhelmed if play resumed.

The Red Sox have a day off on Thursday while the field dries before hosting the Padres for a three-game series. The Blue Jays are back in action Thursday night, at home against the Yankees to kick off a four-game series.
