Spanish police said on Wednesday that they had arrested the owner of a beach restaurant on the island of Mallorca for manslaughter. Four people died when a terrace collapsed.

Two German tourists, a Senegalese man and a 23-year-old Spanish woman who worked in the restaurant in Palma de Mallorca were killed on May 23 when the recently renovated terrace on the first floor collapsed. It fell onto the ground floor, which then fell into the basement. Another 14 people were injured.

The police homicide squad “arrested the owner of the company that operated the store for his alleged involvement in four cases of manslaughter and six cases of grievous bodily harm through gross negligence,” police said.

A police investigation revealed that during the renovation work, a roof was put over the terrace without a permit.

“The structure was not reinforced for such use and was overloaded with weight as a result of the modifications,” police said.

The weight of the roof and the 21 people on the terrace “caused the collapse of the structure,” the statement said.

Police did not name the arrested man, but media identified him as Austrian businessman Christian Arnsteiner, owner of the company that runs the Medusa Beach Club in a popular tourist area of Palma.

The Balearic Islands are one of Spain’s biggest tourist attractions and, according to official figures, welcomed over 14 million foreign tourists last year.
