Shooting involving a police officer in Clayton County

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — An armed 18-year-old was shot and killed by a police officer Monday night after teenagers allegedly broke into a vacant home, Clayton County police said.

The GBI said in response to a request from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Department that it is investigating the shooting, which occurred in the 3200 block of Chippewa Drive.

According to Clayton County police, an initial suspicious person call came in around 4:30 p.m. after a neighbor reported suspects entering a vacant home on Chippewa Drive.

According to police, the 18-year-old came out of the back door of the house armed and got into a conversation with an officer. The officer ordered the suspect to drop the weapon and told him to stop. The officer then opened fire, killing the teenager, police said.

No officers were injured in the incident. A weapon was recovered at the scene that is believed to belong to the 18-year-old who was killed, police said. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on leave, according to protocol.

There were four suspects in total, including the 18-year-old who died. Two other 18-year-olds and a 16-year-old were also in custody for this incident. They were taken out of the house, police said.

The GBI also said it would provide additional information as more details become available.
