Missouri soldier killed in WWII to be buried in St. Louis in July – News/Talk KRMS

A Missouri soldier who was reported missing in action during World War II will finally be buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Saint Louis County.

Staff Sergeant Woodrow Gerdes of St. Louis was killed in the Battle of Hürtgen Forest in West Germany in the fall of 1944, but his unidentified remains were not discovered until three years later when they were found in a foxhole.

At the time, Gerdes was buried in the Dutch American Cemetery until his remains were exhumed in 2018 for DNA testing and positive identification.

Gerdes was one of the 1,700 missing soldiers of World War II.

He will now be reburied at a service in St. Louis County on July 1.st.
