Mayor of Louisville: No bodycam footage of Scottie Scheffler incident (video)

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg says questions remain surrounding Scottie Scheffler’s confrontation with police outside Valhalla Golf Club Friday morning, and no bodycam video has yet emerged to provide answers.

“The officer did not have body camera footage turned on during the incident. We will release the footage we have,” Greenberg said Saturday morning, according to local Louisville station WDRB. “As far as I know, we do not have any. We have not found any video of the initial contact between Officer Gillis and Mr. Scheffler.”

The entire story of Scheffler’s arrest, detention, and subsequent release remains controversial, with differing views. Scheffler was trying to enter the Valhalla Golf Club, where traffic was at a standstill due to a fatal accident earlier that morning. Metro Police Detective Bryant Gillis stopped Scheffler at the gate, and that’s when the stories diverge.

According to police, Scheffler refused to comply and sped up, knocking Detective Gillis to the ground. Scheffler’s attorney said the world’s No. 1 golfer “was simply following orders. He stopped immediately when instructed and at no point did he attack a police officer with his vehicle.”

Body camera footage would have ended any debate about what happened pretty quickly. Greenberg said Gillis either wasn’t wearing a body camera or didn’t activate it. But he indicated there was video from across the street that would be released.

The police report on the incident indicates that a video exists.

Scheffler was charged with four counts, including second-degree assault on a police officer, a felony. He will be arraigned on Tuesday. After a second-round 66, he started Saturday at -9, three strokes behind leader Xander Schauffele.
