Houston traffic: closure of main lanes from North Loop to Homestead

An 18-wheeler was transporting a bulldozer when it crashed and lost its load on the North Loop, causing a major backup on both sides of the highway.

HOUSTON — A fatal crash blocked traffic on the North Loop on the Northeast Side Wednesday afternoon.

According to Houston TranStar, the crash happened around 3:10 p.m. It forced the closure of both directions of the I-610 North Loop in Homestead while crews worked to clear the crash site.

Investigators say an 18-wheeler was transporting a bulldozer when it crashed into the westbound lanes, sending the heavy construction equipment into oncoming traffic. According to Air 11 video, the bulldozer appeared to have come to rest against a guardrail all along the eastbound lanes of the highway.

The bulldozer struck at least one vehicle after falling from the trailer. The driver of the hit vehicle was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said four vehicles were involved in the crash. They said it appears to have been caused by a vehicle failing to maintain its lane.

It is unclear how long the highway will be closed. Authorities said diesel fuel was also spilled on the roadway.
