CPD responds to two calls about shootings


CHARLOTTE VILLE, VA – On June 17, 2024, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Charlottesville Police responded to two separate shootings within five minutes of each other. The first occurred at 6th Street SE and Monticello Avenue. The second occurred in the 1400 block of Midland Street. Officers and detectives immediately responded and began investigating.

Twelve shell casings were recovered from the shooting at 6th Street SE and Monticello Avenue. An occupied vehicle and an occupied residence were struck. A suspect was identified as Malik Luck of Charlottesville and was later taken into custody without incident. A search of the incident area resulted in the recovery of a firearm.

The following offenses were charged against Luck:

  • 18.2-51 – Attempted malicious bodily harm
  • 18.2-53.1 – Use of a firearm in the commission of a crime
  • 18.2-56.1 – Reckless handling of firearms

Mr. Luck is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

In the second incident, nine shell casings were found in the 1400 block of Midland Street. One occupied and one unoccupied vehicle were struck. Shortly after this incident, a stolen vehicle matching the suspect vehicle in this incident was found in the Belmont Park area. Upon further search of the area of ​​the stolen vehicle, a firearm was found.

Later that evening, CPD was called to the area of ​​the 900/1000 block of South 1st Street for a report of shots fired. During the investigation, 69 shell casings were recovered.

CPD continues its operation to combat the recent gun violence in the city. The operation is being expanded with additional resources and personnel. The focus of the operation is on individuals who illegally possess firearms and commit violent acts in our community. CPD is working closely with the Charlottesville District Attorney’s Office to identify, arrest and incarcerate those who continue to plague our community.
