41-year-old plastic surgeon arrested in the US after his wife died during surgery

An autopsy into Hillary Brown’s death is still pending.

A 41-year-old plastic surgeon in the United States has been arrested for the death of his wife, who suffered a cardiac arrest on his operating table in November last year. The doctor, identified as Benjamin Brown, was taken into custody on Monday and charged with second-degree manslaughter for allegedly causing the death of his wife, Hillary Ellington Brown, by negligent homicide. According to The IndependentHe turned himself in to the police after an arrest warrant was issued against him on Friday.

In a press release, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office said officers were called to the 41-year-old’s practice, Restore Plastic Surgery, in Florida on Nov. 21 for a medical emergency. When they arrived at the scene, emergency responders found a female victim, later identified as Hillary Brown, in cardiac arrest. She was taken to a hospital where she was placed on life support before being pronounced dead. An autopsy on her death is pending.

“The autopsy protocol typically takes several months to complete as it typically depends on extensive laboratory and toxicology testing as well as information gathered by our major crimes detectives regarding the circumstances of death,” the police department said in a statement.

Benjamin Brown will be held in the county jail pending his bail hearing, the statement added.

Accordingly The IndependentOn the day Ms. Hillary suffered cardiac arrest, she was scheduled to undergo a minor muscle contracture/abdominal scar repair, liposuction on both arms, lip injections and ear surgery. She reportedly prepared her own anesthesia before the surgeries and took a handful of colorful pills, including Valium.

Shortly before the procedure, she began experiencing symptoms related to the sedation. When she entered the operating room, her husband gave her additional anesthetic without being able to verify what his wife had taken. He then did not document his wife’s medication or dosage. At one point, his wife told him that her vision was blurred and she saw “orange.” In addition, she suffered from restlessness, muscle twitches and blurred vision, which are common symptoms of poisoning. However, the 41-year-old continued to inject medication into her face, after which she became unresponsive and began to have convulsions.

At that point, a physician assistant asked the doctor if they should call emergency services and he said “no.” Over the next 20 minutes, the physician assistant asked again and he said “no” or “wait,” the outlet reported.

The plastic surgeon panicked and asked his assistants to bring him supplies, including an oxygen tank and a stethoscope. However, because the medical assistant was new, it was difficult to find the items. Instead of calling an ambulance, Brown reportedly yelled at the staff and asked, “What medications was she taking?”

About 10 to 20 minutes after Hillary Brown suffered a seizure, Brown instructed an assistant to call 911, but his wife never regained consciousness.

The medical board concluded that Brown’s treatment of his wife was “negligent and haphazard.” In addition, the Florida Department of Health issued an emergency order in May limiting the doctor’s license to perform procedures and surgeries in licensed hospitals and under the supervision of a licensed physician. The department is pursuing disciplinary action in the case. Ben Brown, on the other hand, has chosen to contest the allegations against him, and the case is being heard by the Division of Administrative Hearings.
