Atlanta United transfer Giorgos Giakoumakis

ATLANTA — Atlanta United announced Sunday that forward Giorgos Giakoumakis is moving to Cruz Azul, opening up a spot on the club’s 2024 roster.

“We are grateful for Giorgos’ contributions during his time at the club and wish him the best for the future,” said Carlos Bocanegra, vice president and technical director of Atlanta United. “This transfer illustrates the nature of operating in a global market. With much of the season left to play, we plan to strengthen the group during the next summer transfer window.

Giakoumakis joined the team ahead of the 2023 season and has started 32 of its 41 MLS regular season and playoff appearances. In total, he scored 24 goals and seven assists.

The Major League Soccer secondary transfer window opens on Thursday, July 18 and closes on Wednesday, August 14.

Atlanta United will play again on Wednesday, June 19 against DC United at Audi Field.
