Labour suspends strike for a week

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have “relaxed” the ongoing strike action for one week.

This should enable the tripartite body – government, employers and employees – to agree on a new national wage floor within the next week.

The body meeting, which ended at 11:31am this morning, was co-chaired by NLC President Joe Ajaero and his TUC colleague Festus Osifo.

After the decision to extend the ongoing strike to a one-week moratorium, the unions allowed themselves the luxury of continuing their cooperation with the tripartite committee.

Both unions went on strike on Monday to express their displeasure over the increase in electricity prices and the lack of consensus on a new minimum wage.

Construction work in key economic sectors came to a standstill, schools, businesses, hospitals and airports had to close. The power grid was also switched off, plunging the country into darkness.
