Gordon Ramsay said he was “lucky to be alive” after being involved in a “really bad” accident while cycling in Connecticut earlier this week.

In a video uploaded to Instagram on Saturday, the 57-year-old British celebrity chef thanked his helmet for saving his life as he described the recent accident and showed his injuries, which required him to be treated in hospital.

“Unfortunately, I had a really bad accident this week that really shook me up and honestly I’m glad to be here,” Ramsay said.

The Kitchen Nightmares host continued: “These incredible trauma surgeons, doctors and nurses in the hospitals have been taking care of me this week. They’ve been amazing, but honestly, you have to wear a helmet.”

In his caption, he clarified that he had “no broken bones or sustained any major injuries,” but said he was “a bit bruised and looked like a purple potato.”

The avid cyclist wrote that he was grateful to the trauma surgeons and nurses at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital who cared for him, but “most grateful I am for my helmet, which saved my life.”

“I’m in pain. It’s been a brutal week and I’m getting through it somehow,” Ramsay added in the video.

He lifted his chef’s uniform to reveal a dark bruise covering much of his torso.

The celebrity chef shared a before and after photo showing the damage to his cycling gear.

He emphasized to his 17.4 million followers how important it is to wear a helmet when cycling.

“I don’t care how short the trip is. I don’t care that these helmets cost money. They are crucial.”

Ramsay also shared before and after photos. In the first, he is seen next to his bike wearing shorts, a bright yellow shirt, and a helmet. In the after photos, the same shirt and helmet are seen with significant damage from the accident.

“I’m lucky to be standing here,” he said.

Finally, the father of six children wished everyone a happy Father’s Day.

“I want to wish you all a happy Father’s Day, but please, please, please wear a helmet. If I didn’t, I honestly wouldn’t be here right now.”
