Storms bring strong winds, hail, rainy weather today – and more on the air quality warning in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Severe weather moved through much of the Delaware Valley, blanketing our area with severe weather warnings and advisories for hours Friday afternoon and into the evening.

A flash flood warning for southern Chester County also remains in effect until 9:15 p.m. The National Weather Service also issued a flash flood warning for other parts of Pennsylvania until 10 p.m., including southeast Bucks County, southeast Montgomery County and Philadelphia County.

An additional flash flood warning is in effect until 10:45 p.m. for southeastern Mercer County and northern Burlington County in New Jersey.

When rainy weather arrives in Pennsylvania: Storms today in Lehigh Valley, Poconos, Berks, Bucks and Montgomery County

The severe weather in the Lehigh Valley early Friday dissipated to isolated showers as a cold front moved in from the Poconos.

There were over 60 storm reports in our area. The storm also brought reports of downed trees, flooding, umbrellas blowing through backyards, and hail throughout the Delaware Valley.

Showers and thunderstorms will spread east into South Jersey and along the coast through Friday night. The storms will likely clear by 8-9 p.m., but a few showers are still possible over the next few hours before it clears up and dries out for the weekend.

A Code Orange day of action on air quality goes into effect on Friday, June 14, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

According to DEP, favorable conditions for “strong ozone formation” will exist in the afternoon before today’s storms.

“Code Orange” means the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including people with underlying medical conditions, the elderly, young children and pregnant women. People with respiratory problems are advised to stay indoors until the air calms down.

A Code Orange is level 3 of 6 on the Air Quality Index.

Heatwave on the horizon

After a rainy Friday and a relatively pleasant and, for the time of year, warm Father’s Day weekend, things are going to heat up again.

A week-long heat wave is expected to last until next weekend.
