17-year-old boy struck and killed by train while crossing tracks in Sorrento Valley – San Diego Union-Tribune

A teenage bicyclist crossing railroad tracks with two other boys was struck and killed by a passing Amtrak train in Sorrento Valley early Friday afternoon.

Witnesses told officers the trio were riding bicycles and stopped at the Sorrento Valley Boulevard platform around 12:30 p.m. to allow a northbound train to pass, sheriff’s Sergeant Jason King said.

As soon as the train passed, a 17-year-old began crossing the tracks – apparently not realizing there was a second train heading south, King said.

The teenager was hit by the southbound train and died at the scene. His two companions were uninjured.

The coroner arrived at the scene. The teenager’s name was not released.

Pacific Surfliner announced on X (formerly Twitter) that service in the San Diego area was delayed. The Coaster train also announced on X that a northbound train had been canceled.
