Ridgefield man arrested for sexual assault in New Jersey hotel: police

RIDGEFIELD, CT — A Ridgefield man accused of sexually assaulting a person at a New Jersey hotel earlier this year was arrested Tuesday, according to Redding police.

In a press release, Police Captain Timothy Succi said the department received information on March 11 from the Bergen County, New Jersey, District Attorney’s Office about a possible sexual assault at a Days Inn hotel that occurred in February.

Redding police immediately launched an investigation involving both state and federal law enforcement, Succi said.

After an investigation lasting about three months, police identified 45-year-old David Birkrant of Ridgefield as a suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. He turned himself in to police on Tuesday, according to Succi.

Birkrant was charged with using a minor in an obscene performance, second-degree sexual assault, commercial sexual abuse of a minor, solicitation of sexual conduct, harmful communications with a minor, and injury, endangerment, or morals of children, as well as the sale of children.

Birkrant was held on $250,000 bail, which he was unable to post, and was scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Tuesday, Succi said.

According to Succi, some aspects of the investigation were still active on Wednesday.
