Chicago Police Department issues warning about recent series of robberies and car thefts across the city, including Uptown and South Side

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police issued a warning Thursday about a series of violent crimes that have occurred recently.

Investigators believe there have been a number of armed robberies and car thefts across the city.

In one case, police said, the suspects forced a victim to open his home and then robbed him of his property.

In a public alert, police said there had been at least eight incidents involving a group of men in ski masks. They said they approached victims as they exited their vehicles and robbed them at gunpoint.

The incidents occurred late last month through the first week of June, with the most recent attack occurring last Tuesday in the 1300 block of Winona in the Uptown neighborhood.

According to police, the suspects stole the victims’ vehicles in two of the incidents.

“It’s just heartbreaking that there’s nothing you can do about it,” said local resident Liza Hicks.

One of the most brazen attacks occurred on June 1 in the 3100 block of South Giles Avenue on the South Side. Police said the perpetrators “forcibly escorted” the victim into his home and took property.

Hicks said it’s not the first time her block has been the target of an attack. Now she’s hoping for an increased police presence in her neighborhood.

“Unfortunately, I’ve seen this on cameras a few times and heard from other neighbors that their cars have been broken into,” Hicks said. “… and to hear that it’s even more aggressive, more aggressive, it’s worse. I’m really scared.”
