First case of rare sexually transmitted form of ringworm found in the US; here’s why it’s concerning | Lifestyle News

A rare and highly contagious fungal infection, Transmission through sexual contactrecently emerged in New York City and has caused concern in the medical community.

In a groundbreaking report published Wednesday in the journal JAMA Dermatology, researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine documented the first known case of sexually transmitted ringworm in the United States.

The case concerns a man in his thirties who, while travelling abroad, developed a widespread, itchy rash on his genitals, buttocks and limbs after having sexual contact with multiple partners.

A peer-reviewed press release from NYU Langone Health / NYU Grossman School Of Medicine states: “Genetic testing of fungal samples taken from the patient’s rashes showed that the infection was caused by the species Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII (TMVII). This sexually transmitted form of ringworm has been increasingly diagnosed throughout Europewith 13 cases reported in France in 2023, mostly in men who have sex with men. Notably, the man in the current study said he had had sex with several male partners during his travels, none of whom reported similar skin problems.”

This alarming discovery sheds light on the potential risks associated with this little-known fungal pathogen and demonstrates the importance of vigilance and prompt medical care in containing the spread of emerging infectious diseases.

Symptoms of infection with Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII

“The typical symptoms of infection with Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII, a rare sexually transmitted fungal infection, include red, itchy and scaly rashes that are often confused with other skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis,” explains Dr Vinutha G, senior gynecologist and deputy medical director at Athreya Hospital.

The rash, she explains, can appear on the genital area, thighs, buttocks and other parts of the body involved in sexual contact. “Unlike common ringworm, which forms distinct ring-shaped patterns, this infection can be associated with more diffuse and less defined rashes, which makes it more difficult to identify without proper medical examination.”

Transmission routes and precautionary measures

Dr. Vinutha informs that Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII is mainly transmitted through “direct skin contact during sexual activity.” However, it can also spread through indirect contact with contaminated surfaces such as bedding, towels or clothing.

To reduce the risk of contracting this fungus, she advises practicing safe sex, not sharing personal items and maintaining good hygiene. Thorough hand washing and disinfecting shared surfaces can also help prevent the spread.

Treatment options and measures in case of infection

Dr. Vinutha reports: “Current treatment options for Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII include antifungal drugs such as terbinafine and itraconazole. However, this particular strain has Resistance to current treatments demonstratedIt is therefore crucial for affected individuals to seek medical advice promptly.”

If you suspect you have been infected, she recommends seeing a doctor immediately for a proper diagnosis and treatment. “Persistent or worsening symptoms despite initial treatment may require a combination of antifungal therapies or longer treatment periods,” she adds.

Vulnerable population groups and prevention measures

Dr Vinutha agrees that certain populations are at higher risk of contracting Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII, including men who have sex with men and people with multiple sexual partners. “People with weakened immune systems are also more susceptible to severe infections.”

Prevention measures for these groups include regular screening for sexually transmitted infections, the use of condoms during sexual intercourse and Avoid sexual contact with infected people until treatment is completed. Educating vulnerable populations about symptoms and modes of transmission may also help reduce the incidence of this infection.
