Woman from Tornillo arrested for suspected possession of cocaine in vehicle

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A Tornillo woman was arrested and charged with possession of two bundles of cocaine that she hid where three children were sitting in her vehicle, according to the El Paso County Police Department’s 6th Precinct.

Genoveva Carrillo Esparza, 27, was stopped by a deputy during a traffic stop in the 19300 block of Cobb in Fabens around 8 a.m. on Monday, June 10, according to the deputy’s office.

Carrillo Esparza’s SUV was stopped because it had an expired Texas buyer’s license plate, the constable’s office said.

In Carrillo Esparza’s vehicle were another woman and three children between the ages of 5 and 12.

The auxiliary police officer noticed the driver’s nervous behavior and then questioned the two women, whose statements contradicted each other, the police officer’s office said.

The deputy then received verbal permission to search Carrillo Esparza’s vehicle and found two bundles of a white substance under the children’s seat, according to the police bureau. The white substance tested positive for cocaine, the police bureau said.

Carrillo Esparza was arrested and charged with manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1 over 400 grams. The total weight of both bundles was 5.93 pounds, according to the police bureau.

Carrillo Esparza was booked into the El Paso County Detention Center and held on $100,000 bail, the constable’s office said.

If convicted, Carrillo Esparza faces a prison sentence of five to 99 years and a fine of up to $10,000, according to the police bureau.
