Disgusting! Police officer charged with raping woman in custody

Tonight, a police officer is remanded in custody at the Belize Central Prison after being accused of raping a female prisoner at the Queen Street Police Station on Friday. It is a shameful act reportedly committed by 45-year-old Derwin Marin. The officer was on duty but had no contact with the woman. At one point, Officer Marin is said to have approached her and offered to release her without charge in exchange for sex. He then removed the woman from the cell and escorted her to another area of the station where he apparently had sexual intercourse with her. Following the incident, the Belize Police Department took immediate action against the rogue officer. Criminal and internal investigations are ongoing and the Commissioner of Police has condemned Marin’s actions. This morning, ComPol Williams appeared in the lower courts during Marin’s arraignment where he appealed bail. It is the second time in a matter of weeks that the top cop has donned his lawyer’s hat to prosecute a case.

Chester Williams

Chester Williams, Police Commissioner

“Basically, I appeared in court this morning to arraign the police officer accused of the rape that occurred at the Queen Street police station over the weekend.”

reporter

“You have appealed against bail.”

Chester Williams

“Yes, I have come to object to the bail because we believe that the law is such that the police officer must remain in jail until the case is heard.”

reporter

“It’s a pretty straightforward, straightforward process. Why was it important to you to involve your office in this?”

Chester Williams

“Well, I think it’s about showing the importance of the case. As I said, we have done our best to get rid of these rogue officers who continually do things that embarrass the department. My presence here is a strong signal that we are doing everything we can to ensure that individuals harmed by the actions of the police receive justice. The victim was a prisoner in police custody. The investigation revealed that the officer solicited her for sex in exchange for her release. He then led her out of her cell block where the act took place. We have secured several statements as well as video footage that support her accusation.”

reporter

“Was he aware of the surveillance cameras?”

Chester Williams

“He must be aware of this because every police officer who works in this cell block area knows that there are cameras there.”

reporter

“Yes, but did he go to a hidden area or an area out of sight?”

Chester Williams

“The cameras did not record the act itself, but they did record him taking her out of the cell and taking her to the place where the alleged rape had taken place.”
