‘I’m not policing,’ suspect says after fleeing APD after robbing business – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA — Atlanta police arrested a man after leading him on a chase through a shopping center.

Police responded to 2900 Peachtree Road in northwest Atlanta on Sunday for a burglary at a business. Upon arrival, officers learned from the business owners that an unidentified black man had entered the business through a back door and removed nearly $300 from the cash register.

The business provided police with surveillance video showing the man wearing a “distinctive” Truett McConnell basketball sweatshirt. While police were searching the scene, an officer came across an individual matching the suspect’s description.

Police asked Benny Brathwaite, 22, to turn around so they could place him under arrest. However, he ignored the order given by the police officer and fled on foot.

After a brief pursuit, police chased Brathwaite inside a nearby Publix where other officers intervened, took him to the ground and arrested him.

He was charged with second-degree burglary and intentionally obstructing a police officer. Brathwaite was taken to the Fulton County Jail.
