“That night, divers recovered the missing person. The victim is a child under five years old,” she said. “Unfortunately, death was confirmed on site.”

Police have released few details about the incident, but say only one boat was involved.

It is not known how many people were on board the boat or whether the child was wearing a life jacket, Brochu-Joubert said.

At approximately 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, a distress call was received by emergency services and patrol officers from the Antoine-Labelle Regional County Municipality in the Upper Laurentians. The SQ’s nautical patrol and divers were immediately dispatched to find the child.

Investigators from the SQ’s Major Crimes Unit and police reconstruction officers were also dispatched to the scene to determine the circumstances leading to the child’s death. The investigation continued on Sunday.
