Eight people, including four children, suffered second and third degree burns when an incident sparked a fire at a home on Montreal’s south shore on Saturday evening.

At around 10:15 p.m., emergency services were called to the house on Breton Street in Saint-Constant in Montérégie.

Witnesses told Radio-Canada that they heard loud noises similar to an explosion. They said there was chaos, with people pouring into the street and a neighbour running to get the children out of the house.

According to authorities, all eight people are expected to recover from their injuries.

The circumstances of the incident are still unclear, paramedics said, but the fire could have been caused by an explosion in the garage behind the house.

An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.

Hydro-Québec is currently trying to restore power to the area. According to Radio-Canada, the intensity of the flames caused power lines near the house to melt.
