Atlanta water main rupture: homes and businesses with little to no water

Watershed management crews are on site and “working aggressively” to make repairs.

ATLANTA — The city’s Watershed Management Department is investigating two potential major water main breaks in Atlanta that are causing widespread problems across the city.

The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management reports that one of the breaks involves a 32-inch water main in the Vine City neighborhood, near the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW and James P .Brawley Drive. It’s on the west side of the city and close to several major landmarks and attractions, including Atlanta University Center, Georgia Tech, Mercedes-Benz Stadium and more.

The department said a particular break is causing water outages and low water pressure throughout downtown. Georgia Aquarium said in a statement that it is among those affected businesses, while assuring that the problem only affected restrooms and similar areas and not its pet systems. The aquarium said it would close for the day while the city dealt with the break.

11Alive is contacting other area businesses to confirm outages or other impacts.

Video from the scene from 11Alive SkyTracker showed the intersection flooded as crews attempted to repair the break.

Watershed management crews are on site and “working aggressively” to repair the break affecting the service area, according to the department.

However, it has emerged that the rupture on Joseph E. Boone Boulevard is not the only one impacting the city. The department’s outage map also showed another potentially major outage on Glenwood Avenue SE on the city’s east side near the East Lake Golf Club.

Reports from residents online indicated entire buildings were without water, and others reported outages from Grant Park to the Poncy-Highland area.

The Department of Watershed Management said it will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
